About Mark

Mark Tanney | DC Bankruptcy LawyerLaw is a second career for me. I attended UC Santa Barbara and graduated as a music major in 1977. After college I got married and realized I had to actually make a living. I then spent the next 18 years working in different parts of the country as a professional chef. I went to law school in 1995 at the age of 42, attending Thomas Jefferson School of law in San Diego. I have been a lawyer now for 10 years.

The main reason I decided to become a lawyer is because I experienced my own personal challenges in the late eighties and early nineties. Over a period of several years I went through a divorce, lost my home to foreclosure, and lost my catering business. Those were painful and confusing times. My lack of understanding of the law made these experiences financially and emotionally far worse than they needed to be. I decided to become a lawyer so that I could better handle challenges in my own life and be able to help others through their own difficult times.

After graduating law school I went to work for a federal judge for a year. I then took positions at two excellent law firms in DC over a period of 9 years. I trained with exceptional lawyers at those firms and learned a great deal about the law of consumer protection. I now practice as a sole practitioner in the field of consumer bankruptcy. I live in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC with my wife and son, two dogs and two cats.
